Recently named the #3 CEO in the world by Inc., Bob Chapman is very intentional about using his platform as a business leader to build a better world.

Chapman is Chairman and CEO of St. Louis, MO-based Barry-Wehmiller, a $3B global manufacturing business with almost 12,000 team members. The company began as a small pasteurizing and bottle washer business in 1885 and, through acquisition and organic growth, has grown into 12 business units serving primarily the packaging, paper converting, sheeting and corrugating industries. Chapman became the senior executive of this private company in 1975 at age 30 when the 80-year-old business had $20 million in revenue, outdated technology and a very weak financial position. Urgent vs. Important Tasks

As the great Stephen Covey once asserted, there is a difference between urgent and important tasks. Both are a part of life, but it seems to me that life would be most rewarding if we filled our days more frequently with important rather than urgent matters.

Urgent is the thing that needs attention right NOW! These are tasks that emerge out of a restive mindset, defensive tactical action, rushed, and with a narrow focus on success.

Important are the things that contribute to grander, overarching goals, slow-drip moves that bring you closer to where you want to be, and a sense of intention that correlates with your values.

Adopting a Life-Fit Mindset

I often get asked how I manage to fit podcast-creation, online content conception, professional development planning, full-time teaching, mothering, and managing our house at the same time in a balanced way, and the truth is I DON’T!

I’ve learned recently that there is no such thing as work-life balance. The concept simply does not exist in real life!

My friend, speaker, edu phenom and best-selling author Jimmy Casas talks about adopting the mindset of life-fit, instead. We cannot balance everything important simultaneously. What we can do, however, is live an integrated, rich, lopsided, beautiful life.

One approach that has really helped me is using Time Blocks (Charlie Gilkey):
He suggests a more essentialist style by mixing and matching four blocks of time to structure the work of your day. I like this approach because instead of trying to spin all of the plates at one time, you can focus in on a few with an incredible amount of depth:
  • Focus blocks (90–120 mins blocks of creativity, inspiration and high-level focussed work)
  • Social blocks (90–120 mins blocks of connecting with people)
  • Admin blocks (30–60 mins blocks of lower-energy blocks of time)
  • Recovery (variable-length blocks for exercise, meditation and self-care).

Some days, you might focus more on one goal or interest, and that’s just fine.

Don’t make yourself crazy by trying to be all to all, all the time! Seek out wholeness by ping-ponging between your interests and being okay with the occasional messiness of it!

Your Creativity Type?

Screen Shot 2019-07-12 at 1.02.19 PMMany people think that they’re not creative. I’m not the “creative type,” is what I’ve often heard my friends say before we embark on a decidedly creative activity like painting, card-making, party planning, or lesson creating.

But, the truth is, all humans by definition are inherently creative. We’re born that way. We’re hardwired to be creative. It’s what sets us apart from the other animals in the world.

Our ability to make meaning of the world through the art we make is what makes us human.

Recently, I stumbled upon one of the most fun personality quizzes I’ve ever seen. Designed by leaders in the the field of creativity, Adobe has released a quiz that gives you an in-depth perspective on your creativity type.

I couldn’t help but do the quiz. My result…adventurer. Within moments, I had a page-long breakdown of my creativity type, strengths, drawbacks, potential pitfalls, and the best types of creatives to cross-pollinate with. Accurate, the sheet highlighted the fact that I like to have my hand in many pots, enjoy staying busy, thrive in making social connections, and that I love to spend a lot of my time creating.

I quickly sent the quiz to a small handful of friends and family members who also had remarkably accurate readings.

Curious? Why not try it yourself. It’s fun…no risk…and might just teach you that you are, in fact, very creative after all.

 

 

A Rant about Joker

image0So, this is a personal rant about the movie, Joker. While I know this is just a movie, I challenge the long-term implications to our culture of “normal.” I also question the 14 A rating as we know from The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell, that copy-cat trends in crimes start with an antecedent example.
Last night, my husband and I went to see Joker. Knowing full-well it would be gritty and dark, I mentally prepared myself… disconnected myself as much as I could throughout the movie from the violence, grit, sorrow, horror, and anger in the movie. I tend to take that stuff on as though it was real, so I have to fashion a protective casing around my emotions before I watch that stuff.
Honestly, I was spellbound by Joaquin Phoenix’s method approach to the character. He totally nailed it… to the point where I questioned where reality and fiction intersected.
I felt chills in the back of my skull as the character pulled the trigger on loved ones, when he exposed the delusions he was living to the audience, and when he scared every last human with whom he connected.
As I left the theatre, I didn’t feel empathy. I felt fear. It made me want to pull my children closer to me. It made me skeptical of strangers. Cortisol was clearly pumping through my body because I felt protective of my family. The concern is that I’m a pretty open-minded person. I bet lots of parents felt this way leaving that theatre. It is precisely why I do the work I do. This sentiment is really bad for us. It creates the US vs THEM narrative that allows humanity to put atrocious nazi-esque policies in place.
Throughout the movie, it was clear that the character was battling a grave mental illness exacerbated by severely traumatic childhood experiences and a distinct lack of connection to human beings. He presented as a psychopath, unable to feel empathy for others in pain and sadistically demonstrating joy in hurting others. Psychopaths make up less than 1% of our population.
We learned that the character was on medication, had been repeatedly admitted to psych wards, had been incarcerated, and had to see social workers routinely.
Honestly, I worry about the way the mass market with conflate all mental illness with sadistic psychopathy. Most people living with visible mental illness are not psychopath killers.
I have met incredible people and children who are afflicted with schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, severe depression and anxiety, and delusions. This is out of their control. Many of these folks are tax-payers, parents, business people, creatives, accountant, lawyers, and contribute positively to society with the help of medication.
My major concern is that people will alienate these folks even more than they already do because of fear. Many of these people work hard to overcome the negative stigma of mental illness. There is so much shame already associated with these disorders, I’m not sure that this movie helps dispel the cultural view of mental illness.
We need to wrap our arms tighter around people battling mental illness. We need to remind them of their place in society. We need to continue to fund the social services that support those living in poverty. We need to intervene early with high-risk kids.
We need to move closer not further away.
I don’t think the film should be banned. I just think we need to ensure we have the cultural conversation around the type of illness this portrays.
